Quieter ventilation heat pump – structure-borne noise eliminated

A European HVAC manufacturer needed to reduce noise from a reversible ventilation heat pump to a subjectively pleasant and marketable level. Sontech delivered a solution that lowered the noise level by 4 dB(A).

Fan noise limiting marketability

The customer — a European HVAC manufacturer — had developed a reversible ventilation heat pump for heating and cooling homes and public premises. Fresh air is drawn in through the heat pump, which places high demands on low noise levels.

The measurement showed 48 dB(A) in a 9×8 m room, with the microphone at 1.25 m height and 1 m distance from the unit. The fan was running at its lowest speed where fan noise was dominant. The level was considered too high to be marketable.

The goal was to reduce noise to a subjectively pleasant and marketable level.

Vibration isolation and acoustic damping

Sontech analyzed the noise sources and identified structure-borne noise from the fan as the dominant problem. A combination of vibration isolation and acoustic damping was applied:

What Was Delivered

The following Sontech products were used to achieve the desired noise reduction:

Tecnocell 25 SA

25 mm self-adhesive sound absorbent. Fire rated UL94HF1. Applied to the front plate and around the fan for effective sound absorption.

Damping Foil 15

Self-adhesive vibration damping mat. Fire rated UL94V0. Applied to the front plate and around the fan to reduce vibrations.

Insulation Mat 7 (ISO 7)

Bitumen-based insulation mat, 7.5 kg/m². Applied to the fan housing to dampen structure-borne noise from the fan.
