Noise reduction for microfiche camera

A European office equipment manufacturer needed to reduce noise levels from a high-volume microfiche camera. With Sontech acoustic solutions, a 4 dB(A) reduction was achieved — exceeding the target.

High noise levels from office machine

High-volume microfiche cameras generate substantial noise during operation, negatively impacting the work environment in offices and workrooms.

The customer required a minimum 3 dB(A) noise reduction. Additionally, all materials had to meet fire rating UL94HF1 — a strict standard for office equipment.

Measurements were performed with a Bruel&Kjaer type 2230 with octave/third-octave filters. Room dimensions 9×8 m, microphone positioned 1 m in front of the machine at 1.25 m height. Equivalent sound level Leq was recorded.

Reduction

The final result showed a decrease from 64 dB(A) to 60 dB(A) — a 4 dB(A) reduction, exceeding the target of 3 dB(A).

Perceptually, 4 dB(A) represents a noticeable improvement in the sound environment. The reduction was achieved without affecting machine functionality or cooling.
